RICCARDO SINIGAGLIA ENSEMBLE

RICCARDO SINIGAGLIA (RDM RECORDS) is an ITALIAN ARCHITECT and pioneer of ELECTRONIC COMPOSITION. A master of PYTHAGOREAN SCALES and ANALOG SYNTHESIS, he leads his CLASS OF 2010 ENSEMBLE in a live sonorization of the 1928 silent film Usher. His work bridges ethnomusicology and AVANT-GARDE SOUND RESEARCH.

RICCARDO SINIGAGLIA ENSEMBLE

RICCARDO SINIGAGLIA (RDM RECORDS) is a Milan-based master of electronic composition and an architect of sound whose work bridges the gap between classical avant-garde and modern experimentation. A long-time professor of Electronic Music at the Milan Conservatory, Sinigaglia’s career is defined by the intersection of ethnomusicology, analog synthesis, and the evolution of sonic architecture.

Live Improvisation & The Silent Cinema

A cornerstone of the Ensemble’s recent history is the Live Improvised Sonorization of the 1928 silent masterpiece by Jean Epstein, La Chute de la Maison Usher (The Fall of the House of Usher).

This project—featuring a selected group of his Class of 2010 students—premiered in July 2010 during the "I Concerti del Chiostro" series within the walls of the Milan Conservatory. In collaboration with Anteo Spazio Cinema, the event, as part of a two-week cinematic residency, saw the Ensemble performing real-time electro-acoustic creations. By reacting to Epstein’s haunting visual rhythms, the group translated the gothic atmosphere of the film into a visceral, evolving sonic reality, highlighting Sinigaglia’s dedication to mentoring the next generation of sound researchers through direct, non-notated improvisation.

The Upcoming Release: Echoes of Usher

Following the success of the live performance, RDM Records is proud to present Echoes of Usher. This project serves as the definitive studio document of the ensemble’s experience, where every musician contributed their own living research, merging the 'synthetic heart' and history of Sinigaglia’s Moog and VCS systems with the organic, pulsating life of live instrumentation and field recordings.

Historical Foundations

The aesthetic of the Riccardo Sinigaglia Ensemble is rooted in the maestro’s extensive history of sonic research. The students’ approach to Echoes of Usher is informed by the principles established in Sinigaglia’s landmark projects:

  • The Ethos of Futuro Antico: The ensemble continues the tradition of blending ancient or acoustic timbres with futuristic electronic synthesis.

  • The Vision of Correnti Magnetiche: This new work carries forward the "cinematic" soul and audio-visual focus that defined Sinigaglia’s early groundbreaking computerized systems.

  • The Precision of Chamber Electronics: Often described as "futuristic chamber music," Sinigaglia’s signature balance of intellectual inquiry and tactile, hypnotic rhythms serves as the primary technical blueprint for this collective improvisation.
