The Echoes of Usher (Live at Conservatorio di Milano, 2010)
Riccardo Sinigaglia Ensemble feat. Romina Daniele, Omar Dodaro, Danilo Catanuto, Danilo Zaffaroni, and Francesco Bossi
RDM Records & Books is proud to announce the forthcoming archival release of The Echoes of Usher, a radical sonic reinterpretation of Jean Epstein’s 1928 masterpiece, La Chute de la Maison Usher. Recorded in July 2010 at the Conservatorio di Milano, this CD/EP is movingly dedicated to the memory of Francesco Bossi, whose evocative presence on the Arp Odyssey remains a cornerstone of this historical document.
A Philosophy of Collective Resonance
Under the visionary direction and live electronics of Riccardo Sinigaglia, the performance was organized as a space for "mutual enrichment." Sinigaglia’s principle of "unity in diversity" ensured that each participant could express their individual musical vision while maintaining a deep, listening respect for the collective—an ensemble seeking to understand and feel one another without any single voice prevailing.
This ethos of shared discovery finds a natural synthesis with the philosophical core of Romina Daniele’s research. In her extensive essay and project Voce Sola, she explores the "own-most" voice—not as a subjective retreat, but as an authentic human property intended for sharing and collective resonance. In The Echoes of Usher the individual "voices" of the ensemble converge to create a new, shared meaning of the film, transforming the cinematic space into a site of contemporary epistemological inquiry.
The Interdisciplinary Sonic Fabric: Instrumentation and Vision
The recording presents a discerning interweaving of cutting-edge sonic textures and a manifold acoustic tapestry, where Omar Dodaro (piano), Danilo Zaffaroni (fagotto), and Danilo Catanuto (Wii/electronics) interact within a fluid, multidimensional landscape. Within this collective architecture, the voice of Romina Daniele acts as a structural element of "sound-thought," contributing to the ensemble's shared equilibrium. Providing the final, essential layer to this project is the late Francesco Bossi’s vision of music as "pure sound", centered on the electroacoustic era's shift from composing with notes to "composing sounds". For him, even the title of a work was pure sonic matter—a perspective that allowed the ensemble to transcend traditional boundaries and reinterpret Epstein’s imagery through a purely structural, sonic lens.
Technical & Release Notes
The Electronics Setup: The performance features a pioneering integration of electronics, utilizing the Wii controller as a gestural interface to bridge physical movement with digital synthesis.
Archival Quality: Meticulously mastered to preserve the spatial depth and acoustic environment of the original 2010 performance at the Conservatorio di Milano.
Release Status: The official release date for The Echoes of Usher is to be announced. Please stay tuned to our official channels for the forthcoming launch.
Deepening the Connection
Acting as a practical corollary to her broader study of audio and image, this release materializes the theories explored in Daniele’s writings on Epstein and her foundational book, Ascenseur pour l'échafaud, the place of music in audiovision (RDM Records, 2011). It serves as the auditory realization of her inquiry into the intersection of sound and sight, offering a tangible bridge that transforms her "sound-thought" philosophy into a structural, lived experience. In this framework, the voice and electronics transcend mere accompaniment to become architectural components of the filmic narrative.
